Enjoying Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a country full of warm, welcoming people.  A walk through Nesabar or Borovets gives one the impression the country is completely at home with it’s new found fame as a tourist spot for many Europeans.  A short ride to the villages outside Sunny Beach gives a true picture of how Bulgarians go about their everyday lives.  The houses and schools, the churches and community buildings are simultaneously modern and aged. 

Mornings are to be enjoyed in local coffee houses enjoying the strong local coffee and a breakfast of toast and an assortment of meats and cheeses.  A freshly squeezed orange juice and lovely fresh salad with Balkan cheese make a perfect lunch.  Traditional evening meals are full of flavour while not being overpowering.  For the more cautious diners there are always alternatives that will be familiar.  If you find yourself eating a meal with a Bulgarian make sure you try the food provided—it’s fine if the food isn’t to your taste as long as you’ve at least tried it!

Have you wondered what else is there?  How about the Rila Monastery in the heart of the Rila Mountains?  Plovdiv is Bulgaria’s 2nd city with lovely market areas.  Malavetsa is a small ski area almost completely untouched by tourists.  No matter where you find yourself you are wrapped in the history of this country. Statues from the communist regime loom    like ghosts throughout the country.  In many smaller cities and towns horse drawn carts occupy the roads beside the most luxurious of European cars.  Bulgaria is full of lovely and inspiring contrasts
